With the new season slowly approaching it is time to start thinking of how you will become a better player or team. Here are a few simple ideas to get you started.
1. Have everyone on your team learn the rules or at least read them once
2. Work on the basic skills outlined below

Throwing: practice the flick, backhand and hammer as these throws are the most useful. Practice throwing into the wind, against the wind and perpendicular to the wind to see how the disc behaves in certain conditions. This helps because you learn little things like if you throw into the wind the disc always rises and if you throw with the wind the disc always sinks. During your warm up throws make sure everyone rotates in a circle so they get used to the wind.

Pivoting: Have your team practice pivoting. Most players do not pivot far enough from side to side to make the defender have to move. Design drills that involve pivoting before throwing. Teach players that they can pivot all the way around if they want to make a dump pass.

Faking:Practice "good fakes". Some people's fakes are not believable and so they do not make the defender commit. When you play a game practice game throw in a rule where if you do not perform a believable fake before throwing, it is a turn over. There is nothing more satisfying then performing such a good fake that the defender actually dives to prevent the throw.

Pancake catch: This is the most reliable catch and should be used whenever possible. (one hand on top of the disc and one underneath the disc). To get even better at it when you are running try to hop/jump in the air just before you catch it. Your body is more stable when your feet are not on the ground and so you will drop less passes. All the pros do it! If you are standing still or moving slowly you do not have to hop... as that would look silly.

Some other things to consider:

Four Reasons to Make a pass
1. To reset stalls
2. to Gain yards
3. to get the disc to a better thrower
4. to spread the field wide

Four Rules of Passing
1. Lead your team mate
2. Make the pass Catcheable
3. Throw where the defender can't get it
4. Avoid risky throws

Excelent! The practice talk comes out, which can only mean one thing. ULTI SEASON IS DRAWING NEAR!

Here is a very simple drill you can use to practice every aspect of what Kevin is talking about. It's called a 3-man drill. If you've played organised ultimate before, you probably already know of this. If you havnt, well for one...it's about time!!!! hehe, here it goes:

Pros: You only need 3 people!
It involves throwing, catching, faking, piviting and marking (Blocking)

Cons: Are there any cons in Ultimate?!...WOO!

So here is how you set up the 3 man drill:

One person has the disc (thrower or "Handler")

Just a quick word.
The key to a good fake is that it not really a fake at all. You should be able to throw every fake, your fake form should be the exact same as a real throw, you are simply cutting it off right b4 the disc leaves your hand. Make sure you pivot and force the mark to move.

also, i hear that BHS will be attending a tourny in ottawa, just wondering where abouts?
